Fullstack WordPress Developer

(Based in London and/or Thame, Oxford with option of home working)

Role summary: WordPress refresh, development & optimisation for consumer site, build and integration of new user tools using APIs.

The HomeOwners Alliance is a popular property advice website supporting homeowners and those aspiring to own with unbiased advice and trusted services at every stage of buying, selling and owning a home. We make home buying and selling a less stressful and less costly experience. We are the only UK organisation dedicated to homeowners, giving them a voice in the media and campaigning for change.

We are now looking to expand our tech capacity to consolidate and convert our popular content rich website to a digital services hub. Our website is a mixture of in house applications and third party products. We are looking for someone to help us improve the entire architecture and deliver transformation.

Over the last 12 months a substantial amount of work has been put into optimising and securing our website asset, building integration into CRM and revenue generating tools. Our next step is to reconfigure the website to further reduce reliance on third party plugins and make the site more resilient, deepening integration of technologies and ownership to create a platform for services.

Skills requirement: Fullstack(ish) Developer with PHP7, Javascript, JQuery, API integration (WebHooks, JSON, SOAP, XML, PHP, JavaScript, etc.), HTML5, CSS3, writing WordPress Plugins/Scripting, Advanced Custom Fields. Clean, efficient and secure PHP coding with an ability to review, unravel and report crappy code when encountered, with the skills to rewrite as required.  Happy for developer to use pre-processors Sass, Less, etc.

Experience: In terms of design, UI, accessibility etc. it is expected the developer will fully contribute in design discussions and decisions, having enough maturity and design conscience to speak up rather than quietly implement a poor design. Somewhere between 70/30 to 50/50 developer to designer.

Toolset familiarity and environment: Typical set up of local dev > staging > production. Staging and production is on AWS, projects managed through Jira/Slack, Git/SVN, deployment is via DeployHQ, we use cloud apps for both dev tools and business tools. We have a remote development site for those developers where local machine development is an issue.

Company environment: Company management is open and responsive (developers will be talking with directors, reporting to Head of Website). The bulk of the team work in our offices in Highgate, some flexibly from home and you will have a desk in our offices in London and Thame, and across flexible workspaces across London. We meet regularly, remote working is not an issue. And we’re a really great bunch of people.
