John Lewis Home extensions

You can find everything you need to furnish your home at John Lewis & Partners – and soon you’ll be able to use the firm to extend it too.

This week the company announced it is planning to offer customers home extensionsThe move follows John Lewis’ purchase of design and building company Opun last June. Since then, Opun has been operating independently but now it will work alongside John Lewis Home Solutions, which finds tradespeople for smaller jobs. They will be brought together under one roof to design and build extensions.

According to John Lewis & Partners: “By creating a 21st century Home Improvement proposition in what is currently a fragmented sector, customers will benefit from an end-to-end home improvement service, which includes inspiration, design, project management and execution.”

The Opun website shows an impressive range of stylish projects the firm has undertaken. From a contemporary single-floor extension, to an Art Deco style bathroom to a sleek Scandi-style kitchen.

Who will it appeal to?

The retailer will be aiming to capitalise on the difficulties many homeowners face when it comes to finding good quality builders. Our recent Annual HomeOwners Survey polled by YouGov found that Brits are struggling to find decent builders to get their home repaired or done up.

John Lewis has a reputation of selling high quality goods so we would expect this new proposition to offer a high quality service. But it may well also have the price tag to match. So as always, it’s essential to shop around.

How do I find a builder?

You can find trusted builders in your area for free using our Find a Builder Service in partnership with the Federation of Master Builders. The FMB is the UK’s largest trade association for the construction industry. We’ve partnered with them because they check company history, financial records and proof of insurance. All their member’s work will also have been checked on site by an independent inspector to make sure it’s completed to a high standard.

There are lots of important steps to remember whenever you are having work done on your home. For example, make sure you always get three quotes for any work. And also don’t be shy about asking for and following up on two or three references from their customers.
