The government announced this week a £500 million Hardship Fund which will provide council tax relief to vulnerable people and households to help those affected most by coronavirus.

The government has set out that the Hardship Fund will go to local authorities in England to enable them to reduce the 2020 – 2021 council tax bills of working age people receiving Local Council Tax Support.

Councils will also be able to use the funding to provide further discretionary support to vulnerable people through other support arrangements such as Local Welfare Schemes.

The Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick MP said, “Providing the necessary financial support to people and families is critical at this difficult time when many people will be concerned about changes to their income.”

Will I get a discounted council tax bill following this announcement?

The Hardship Fund is aimed at those in receipt of Local Council Tax Support schemes as they are seen as the most vulnerable to changes in income. An estimated 2.3million people are expected to benefit.

New bills should be being issued for those affected in the coming weeks for the 2020/21 year.

The Government expects councils to use the extra cash to reduce the bills of everyone who is eligible by £150 a year. And if they have a bill for less than that, they likely won’t pay council tax at all.

Can I get a discount if I don’t already receive local council tax support?

If you are struggling to pay your council tax there are still a number of options for getting help:

  • Speak to your council about deferred payments. We know a number of our site visitors have arranged a deferred payment (ie they will not have to pay council tax) until June. At that point you can get in touch again to discuss other options. Bear in mind that you’ll still have to pay the full amount over the year, so when you start paying again your bill each month will be bigger than normal.
  • Speak to your council about varying your payment plan. You may be able to spread the costs.
  • Some councils are offering council tax support for households struggling to pay. Speak to your council today
  • See if you are eligible for a council tax discount
