Check your architects credentials

Lucy and Steve wasted tens of thousands of pounds on repair costs and had years of building headaches, because they used an “architect” who turned out not to be an architect at all.

When Lucy and Steve began discussions with him about major internal refurbishment, they were shown the different pay scales of the Royal Institute of British Architects scale. They decided to engage him to administer the project and agreed to do so on the RIBA contract discussed.

At all times Lucy and Steve – both highly educated professionals – were under the impression that the man was a qualified architect. They often introduced him as “our architect”, referred to him as an architect in emails, and received invoices for “architect services”. He never corrected them. It turned out that while the man was a partner in an architectural company, members of which are qualified architects, the man that Lucy and Steve engaged was not an architect at all.
